01

What it is

What is the Mexico to US trade corridor?

The trade in goods between Mexico and the United States. Mexico reported US$795.3 billion of two-way trade with the US in 2025: US$545.4 billion of exports and US$249.9 billion of imports1.

02

Why it matters

Why does it matter?

Mexico was the largest US goods trading partner in 2025, with US$872.8 billion of two-way trade on US Census data2. Factories on both sides share production, so a change in a tariff or a treaty rule reaches exporters and importers in both countries at once.

03

How it works

How does it work, and how is it paid for?

Goods entered under a USMCA claim are exempt from the 10% Section 301 tariff on Mexican goods in force since July 24, 2026; 88% of US imports from Mexico met USMCA rules from January to May 20262. Section 232 tariffs on autos, auto parts, steel, aluminum and copper still apply under their own rules, which give some USMCA goods partial relief2. The corridor watch lists every rate. Trucks carry most of the value3. Buyers and sellers agree the payment terms: cash in advance, letters of credit, collections or open account, with factoring and supplier finance alongside. No public source gives the share of each in this corridor.

Two sides of the same trade

Why do Mexico and the US report different numbers?

Each country records its own customs declarations, with its own rules for valuing goods, naming the partner country, counting re-exports and timing. Northbound, the two sides agree within 1.2% in 2025. Southbound, the US reports US$338.0 billion of exports to Mexico and Mexico reports US$249.9 billion of imports from the US, a gap of US$88.1 billion, equal to 35.3% of Mexico's figure1. Every figure in this series says whose data it is, and rankings use Mexico's data. Read why the numbers differ.
